only flights with more than 100 OLC points are listed

ron1-168x125.jpgAs can be seen the competition was basically decided on May 14 when most pilots got their best flights in. And once again the winner is Ron Clark who beat last year's winner Dan Housler by a mere 9 points.

This is tight competition and both pilots have won the WBC before. Not too far behind are Chris Young and Brad Hill (just 0.4 points apart), each posting their best "Western" flights ever. This is the tenth year for the WBC and it has shown to be a major stimulus for exploring the west side XC potential.

Examining the OLC statistics for the major XC sites in Region 8 shows some interesting facts and developments. With the wide spread acceptance of the OLC these statistics are pretty representative of XC soaring activity and potential.

  Accummulated OLC Points
Airfield 2013 (2012)
Ephrata 92,312  (98,164)
Arlington 21,091  (22,698)
Bend 16,957  (5,244)
Twisp 14,122  (10,674)
 Macay 13,237  (15,238)

As usual Ephrata ranks as no 1, even though the numbers are down from last year (when Ephrata hosted the 18m Nationals). And Arlington remained in second place, with slightly reduced numbers. This is seems to be mainly due to the fact that some of our best pilots spent more time exploring the XC potential of Twisp, which showed major gains (with more to come). And coming on strong (and also challenging Arlington for second place in the future) is Bend, where a very active group of XC pilots is exploring the High Desert.

Let's see, how the OLC year 2014 is shaping up.
